A brick-built building in Vienna dating from 1905 is experiencing a renaissance following redevelopment: the former engineering works – part of the Backstein II project – has been transformed into a loft space for a publishing house, repurposing the robust historic industrial structure to create a modern working environment.
A space once filled with the noise of heavy machinery now houses an airy open-plan office with a floor area of 1600 square metres. The conversion work exposed steel girders and an old wooden ceiling, evoking the ambience of a typical New York loft. Slate surfaces and blue linoleum lend a contemporary feel, while glass pods have been installed to provide enclosed spaces for meetings.
