Refurbishment and repurposing of existing building stock offers a resource-efficient, time-saving alternative to new build. An impressive example is the former Tegetthoff Naval Barracks in Vienna’s Döbling district, a listed building dating from 1938 that has been transformed into a residential complex.
The main building with its 18 luxurious apartments combines historic tradition with comfortable high-end living, including stunning views over the Danube. It is complemented by two new timber-clad bungalows, heated and cooled by stand-alone air-to-water heat pumps. With their clear, contemporary lines, the bungalows form a counterpoint to the original structure.
Every detail, from the landscaped riverside gardens to the bathing jetties, is carefully thought out and combines to form a harmonious whole.
An amalgamation of traditional and contemporary that redefines waterside living, the project was awarded with the Fiabci Prix d’Excellence Austria in the Pre-War Buildings category.
