A production facility from the 1960s has gained a new lease of life as a flagship urban architecture project: the new life science hub in Vienna’s Hernals district is now home to several subsidiaries of a global leader in the field of bioscience and diagnostics. A hub for research and teaching, the building epitomises the smart transformation of existing building stock into innovative workspaces and research facilities that are fit for the future.
Thermal insulation combined with external sun blinds protects the building from overheating and helps reduce the amount of cooling required. A photovoltaic facility has also been installed, covering approx. 60% of the building’s electricity requirements.
On the ground floor, the facade is broken up by extensive glazed elements that create a link between the interior of the building and the urban space outside. This transparent design allows passers-by to look into the newly-created showroom presenting the latest developments in science and technology.
The conversion of this building demonstrates how a forward-looking approach to the repurposing of existing building stock not only creates added value for companies but also has a positive effect in terms of urban development and protecting the environment.
